Last week, the government sent warning letters to 519 hospitals for hiding their prices. That's not a typo. Five hundred and nineteen.

And they said more letters are coming.

Why this rule exists

For years, hospitals could charge you almost anything. You'd get the bill after the visit. By then it was too late to shop around or say no.

So a federal rule went into effect a few years ago. It says hospitals must post their prices online, in a way regular people can find. A big price list, plus a simple list of common services, like an MRI or having a baby.

The idea is simple. You should be able to see the price before you owe the money.

What just happened

The government checked, and a lot of hospitals were not following the rule.

So they sent warnings to 519 of them. Texas had the most. California, Indiana, and Louisiana were close behind. Almost every state had at least one hospital get a letter.

Here's the part that matters for you. Hospitals that keep hiding their prices can be fined. The fine can reach $5,500 a day. That's over two million dollars a year for one hospital.

The government also said they are just getting started. More hospitals will get caught.

Why you should care

When prices are hidden, you can't tell if your bill is fair. You can't shop around. You can't catch a mistake. You just pay and hope.

When prices are out in the open, the power shifts to you.

You can look up what something should cost. You can compare your bill to the posted price. And if your bill is way higher, you have something solid to point to when you call and ask them to fix it.

What to do with this

Next time you have a planned procedure, or you're staring at a confusing bill, try this:

1. Search for the hospital's prices. Type the hospital name plus "price transparency" or "standard charges" into Google. Look for a price list or a price tool on their website.

2. Look up your service. Find the procedure you had or are about to have. Write down the price they posted.

3. Ask for the cash price. Hospitals often have a lower "cash price" or "self-pay price." Sometimes it's a lot lower than what they bill you. Ask for it by name.

4. Compare it to your bill. If your bill is higher than the price they posted, call them. Tell them what their own website says. Ask them to match it.

5. Speak up if they won't show you. If a hospital won't give you prices at all, that's a red flag. They may be breaking the rule. Tell them you know about the price transparency law and you'd like the posted price.

The price is supposed to be right there for you to see. That's the law. Hundreds of hospitals are now in hot water for hiding it.
